چکیده

A new mechanism for the generation of ionic currents around tip growing cells is presented. Because of the absorption of a nutrient by the cell tip, its concentration decreases along the cell sides. As a nutrient molecule enters the cell with a well defined number of protons via a channel called a symport, the influx of protons decreases when one moves away from the tip. Then the balance between influx and efflux of protons is broken and a proton current loop is generated, entering the cell tip and leaving farther back. Using typical values for symport membrane current, pH, and nutrient concentration, we obtain an order of magnitude of the current intensity in agreement with the vibrating electrode measurements. Quantitative analysis of concentration gradient and ionic currents associated with hyphal tip growth in fungi.

It has been shown previously that the nutrient gradient generated by a tip growing elongated cell induces an ionic current entering the cell tip and looping back in the extracellular medium [L. Limozin, B. Denet and P. Pelcé, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 4881 (1997)]. We apply this mechanism to the case of hyphae of fungi, using realistic cell geometries, symport kinetics, proton pump permeabilities, a...

Modelling of Low Level Ionic Current Sensing Micro-tip

Sensing of electrical quantities e.g. current and charges at micro and nano level is a challenging task for the researchers. Most of the electrical quantities produced as a result of natural phenomenon are very small and need infinitesimally small sensors to be detected. The authors of this paper are developing an appropriate micro/nano array sensor that is capable of sensing ionic currents in ...

Existence of a delayed rectifier K+ current in the membrane of human embryonic stem cel

Introduction: Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are pluripotent cells that can proliferate and differentiate to many cell types. Their electrophysiological properties have not yet been chracterzed. In this study, the passive properties (such as resting membrane potential, input resistance and capacitance) and the contribution of delayed rectifier K+ channel currents to the membrane conducta...

Modifications of Extracellular Electric and Ionic Gradients Preceding the Transition from Tip Growth to Isodiametric

Fern (Onoclea sensibiis L.) gametophytes exposed to blue light are induced to undergo a morphological transition from a tip-growing filament to a planar prothallus. Extracellular measurements of electric currents and localized ion activities around the apical cell of 8 to 10 day-old gametophytes were made with a vibrating probe and ion selective electrodes. In darkness, we observed exit current...

Electrophysiological Properties of Achlya Hyphae: Ionic Currents Studied by Intracellular Potential Recording

The electrical properties of the water mold Achlya bisexualis were investigated using intracellular microelectrodes. Hyphae growing in a defined medium maintained a membrane potential (Vm) of 150 to -170 mV, interior negative. Under the conditions used here, this potential was insensitive to changes in the inorganic ion composition of the medium. Changes in external pH did affect Vm, but only o...
